About the app
Source to Sea: The Nile is a virtual expedition powered by real workouts. Every real rowing or paddling session — on the water or on an indoor rowing machine — moves your boat down a satellite map of the actual Nile: 5,500 km from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea, plotted from nearly 1,490 points along the river's course. Distance syncs automatically from Apple Health or can be logged manually. Along the way you unlock 44 real landmarks, each with its own history, earn 140+ awards, and can compete on an opt-in global leaderboard. The app is free, has no ads or tracking, and never accesses your location — your position on the river is calculated purely from logged distance. For iPhone, iOS 18 or later.
About the developer
Source to Sea was built by Carel van der Merwe, a corporate pilot and indie developer from South Africa. It's published by CharterOne Solutions, his software studio, which also builds PilotDocs — a document organiser for pilots.

Story angles
- Fitness apps count workouts; this one takes you somewhere — a rejection of streak-and-ring anxiety mechanics in favour of one long, honest journey.
- Built by a corporate pilot who codes between flights.
- The route is real: nearly 1,490 plotted points along the Nile's actual course, with 44 landmarks and their history.
- Privacy as a feature: no ads, no tracking, no location access — position on the river is computed from workout distance alone.
- Indoor rowing, made interesting: erg sessions count metre-for-metre toward crossing Africa.
